Limbones Island: A Historical Paradise for Beginner Anglers

The Island

Located in Maragondon, Cavite, Limbones Island, better known as isla ng MUGIW, among the locals,  here, is a sanctuary for different fish species. It boasts of a variety of live and healthy corals, and amazing crustaceans especially the colorful mantis shrimp.

History will also tell us that Limbones played a crucial role in defending Manila during World War II. It served as "the eye" of Filipino and American forces for any enemy ship. It also served as fire control station a docking area for both Filipino and American ships, and the center of communication facilities in the area for military guarding Manila.

We managed to climbed on top of the island using the concrete staircases made during the war and which are still usable. We found some ruined structures and sentry towers. The sentries are interesting. It could see anything coming from all directions.

If we look at the larger map, we can understand why this island is strategically important for the defense of Manila.

For beginner anglers and fishing hobbyist, this is one fishing spot that will not let you go home without anything.

How to go there?

If you are from the NCR and you have your own car, drive all the way to Patungan, Maragondon, Cavite. Boats are available for rent (piece of advice:  talk directly to boat owners. Avoid fixers. They will charge you twice as much rent). From Patungan to Mugiw, our usual rental fee is one thousand pesos. They will bring you to the island and pick you up later in the afternoon or the following day or after 2 days. You decide how long  you are staying on the island. Just dont forget to bring food and water.

If you do not have your own car, take a bus and go to PITX in ParaƱaque. From PITX terminal, there are buses going to Nasugbu via Ternate Nasugbu Road. Get off to Patungan. Rent a boat.

The Usual Catch

Different species of Lapu-lapu or grouper fish will greet your casting. Samaral and danggit fishes are also abundant in this spot. Molmol fishes are also varied and huge. Talakitok is seldom seen on this part but tulingan, balo, bisugong bato are very common.

Come with me next time I visit this island.
